Why are I.E. of 5d - elements greater than 3d- elements ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

I.E. of 5d- elements is greater than 3d- elements because of poor shielding of nucleus by 4f electrons in 5d elements, resulting in the greater effective nuclear charge acting on valence electrons.
