Explain why Cu(I) is diamagnetic while Cu(II) is paramagnetic in nature?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know that, Cu (I) has electronic configuration : `[Ar]3d^10 4s^0`
Cu (II) has electronic configuration : `[Ar]3d^9 4s^0`
Cu (I) is diamagnetic because its d-subshell is fully filled. Cu (II) is paramagnetic because there is one unpaired electron.
