Which of the two is paramagnetic V(IV) or V(V)
and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know that,
`V (Z = 23): [Ar] 3d^3 4s^2 , V (IV): [Ar] 3d^1 4s^0, V(V): [Ar] 3d^0 4s^0`
Thus, V (IV) has one unpaired electron while V (V) has no unpaired electron. Hence, V (IV) is paramagnetic in nature.
