Which one is more paramagnetic Fe^(2+) o...

Which one is more paramagnetic `Fe^(2+) or Fe^(3+) (Z = 26)` ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know that more the number of unpaired electrons, more will be the paramagnetic character. The electronic configuration of `Fe^(2+)` and `Fe^(3+)` is given as :
`Fe^(2+) : [Ar]3d^6 4s^0 Fe^(3+) : [Ar] 3d^5 4s^0`
Thus, `Fe^(3+)` is more paramagnetic than `Fe^(2+)` because there are five unpaired electrons in `Fe^(3+)` while `Fe^(2+)` has only four unpaired electrons.
