Give the cause of Lanthanide Contraction.

As we move from left to right in the lanthanoid series, the nuclear charge increases. This is compensated by shielding effect off-electrons. But f-electrons have poor shielding effect due to their shapes. It means increase in nuclear charge is not overcome by shielding effect. Hence, atomic or ionic radii decreases which leads to the lanthanoid contraction.
