Discuss the main postulates of valence bond theory.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The main postulates of valence bond theory are as follows :
i) The empty hybrid orbitals of metal ion overlap with the filled orbitals of the ligand to fonn metal ligand bond.
ii) The participating d - orbitals may be inner ( n-1) d or outer nd.
iii) Each ligand atleast contains one orbital having lone pair of electrons.
iv) The hybridised orbitals may be s,p or d orbitals. They are directed towards a particular direction giving a definite geometry to the compound.
v) The central metal ion provides suitable empty orbitals to the ligands for coordinate bonding.
