On the basis of valence bond theory explain the structure and magnetic nature of `[Fe(H_2O)_6]^(3+)` complex ion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electronic configuration of `Fe = 3d^6 4s^2` in this compound Fe is in `+2` oxidaton state so

Now as CN is a strong field ligand so all unpaired electrons will pair up and.

the hybridisation of Fe is `d^2 sp^3`. The glometry of the compound is octahedral. Since this compound has no unpaired electrons it is diamagnetic.
