Explain magnetic Behaviour of [Fe(CN)6]^...

Explain magnetic Behaviour of `[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-)` and `[Fe(CN)_6]^(3-)` anions.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In case of `[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-)` eletronic configuration is `3d^6` i.e., Fe(II) and in case of `[Fe(CN)_6]^(3-)` electronic configuration is `3d^5` i.e. Fe is existing as Fe (III) .

Now as we know `CN^(-)` is a strong ligand so electron pairing will take place and hence number of unpaired electrons in `[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-)` is zero. But on the other hand in case of `[Fe(CN)_6]^(3-)` number of unpaired electrons is one (1). Due to the presence of unpaired electrons `[Fe(CN)_6]^(3-)` is paramagnetic.
