[Fe(CN)6]^(4-) and [Fe(H2O)6]^(2+) are o...

`[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-)` and `[Fe(H_2O)_6]^(2+)` are of different colours in solutions. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In both case Fe is in +2 state having electronic configuration `3d^6` i.e having four unpaired electrons. Now both `H_2O and CN^(-)` possesses different crystal field splitting energy, they absorb different componentS of visible ligJlt for d-d transition. So-the colours emitted are different.
