Explain magnetic Behaviour of [Fe(CN)6]^...

Explain magnetic Behaviour of `[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-)` and `[Fe(CN)_6]^(3-)` anions.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`[Fe(CN)_6]^(3-)` : lron is in + .3 oxidation state. `Fe^(3+)` ion has `3d^6` outer electronic configration.

Therefore, `[Fe(CN)_6]^(3-)` is weakly paramagnetic due to the presence of one unpaired electron in 3d - orbitals.
`[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-)` : Iron is in +2 oxidation state `Fe^(2+)` ion has outer electronic `3d^6` confiuraton.

Therefore, `[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-)` is diamagnetic due to the absence of unpaired electron.
