What is crystal field splitting ? How will you account for the colour of compounds having completely filled and empty d orbitals and partially filled d orbitals ?

Text Solution

The splitting of degenerate d-orbitals intci two different energy sets in the influence of ligands is called crystal field splitting. The two energy sets are : i) `d_(x^2-y^2) and d_(z^2)`. (ii) d_(xy), d_(yz) , d_(zx)`
Crystal field effects in octahedral and tetrahedral coordination entities
i) d- orbital splitting in an octahedral field
i) If `Delta_0 gt P `: In this case pairing energy of central metal is less than crystal field· splitting energy hence pairing will takes place.

ii) If `Delta_0 gtP : ` In this case pairing energy of central metal is less than crystal field· splitting energy hence pairing will takes place.

ii) If `Detla_0 lt P` : In this case pairing energy is greater than crystal filled splitting energy hence pairing will not takes place.
