In `[Ni(H_2O)_6]^(2+)`,Ni is in +2 state with the configuration `3d^8`. Having two unpaired electrons which do not pair up due to the presence of weak `H_2O` ligand. Hence it is coloured. In d - d transition red light is absorbed and green light is emitted.
But in case of `[Ni(CN)_4]^(2-)`, Ni is in the +2 O.S. with electronic configuration `3d^8`. But due to strong ligand `(CN^(-))` paring takes place. Due to the absene of unpared electrons it is colourless.
