Discuss the nature of bonding in metal carbonyls.

The bonding in metal carbonyls can be discussed as follows :
i) Carbon of CO donates its lone pairs of electrons to the empty orbitals of metal atom and forms a sigma `M larr C` bond.
ii) The filled d - orbitals of metal donate their electrons to vacant antibonding 7t molecualar orbitals of CO. This results in the formation of `M to Cpi` bond. TH ebonding can be shown as :
