Why are alcohols comparatively more soluble in water than the corresponding hydrocarbons ?

The solubility of alcohols in water is due to the presence of hydrogen bonding in water molecule and alcohol.

But hydrocarbons cannot form H—bonds with water. So, these are insoluble in water.
