Why are ethers polar in nature ?...

Why are ethers polar in nature ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ethers are polar in nature, due to their bent shape. In ethers, there are two lone pairs on the oxygen atom. The repulsion between these lone pairs stresses the two alkyl
or aryl groups towards each other. Now due to bent shape of ethers, the polarity of R-O bond do not cancel to each other and have net dipole moment. Hence, ethers are polar in nature.
