Why do aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reaction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Aldehydes and ketones are highly reactive due to their polar nature.Polar nature is due to electronegativity diference between oxygen and carbon. More electronegative oxygen atoms attract electroJs towards itself. So, O-atom gains partjal negative charge and C-atpm gains partial positive charge. Thus, addition reaction takes place by nucleophilic attack and not by electrophilic attack.
