Hoffmann bromamide reaction
The reaction in which 1°- amines are prepared from amides, is known as Hoffmann bromamide reaction. In this reaction, amide is heated with `Br_2` in presence of an alkali. The amine formed is one carbon less than that of amide.

This reaction is known as Hofmann degradation reaction as in this reaction in products,there is one carbon atom less than the origional amide.
