Why do primary amines have higher boiling point than tertiary amines?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The chemical formulae of primary, secondary and tertiary amines are as follows:

As above formula shows that there is no hydrogen in tertiary amines. So, tertiary amines do not form hydrogen bond. So, intermolecular forces between tertiary amines are weaker. Hence, boiling point is very less. On the other hand, in primary amines two hydrogen atoms are attached to· electronegative N-atom. It leads to the greater magnitude of H-bonding and hence, larger intermolecular forces. So, boiling point is higher than that of tertiary amines.
