Formula mass is used to represent the mass of ionic compounds which do not contain molecules as constituent units. Ionic compounds are made up of positively and negatively charged ions which are arranged in a three dimensional structure. The formula such as NaCl is used to calculate the formula mass instead of molecular mass. Formula mass of sodium chloride= atomic mass of sodium + atomic mass of chlorine
