A solution is prepared by adding 60g of methyl alcohol to 120g of water. calculate the mole fraction of methanol and water?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We are given that Mass of methyl alcohol= 60g
Mass of water= 120g
We are to find out the mole fraction of methanol and water.
Moles of methyl alcohol `=(60)/(32)= 1.875` [Molar mass of `CH_(3)OH= 32`]
Moles of water= `(120)/(18)= 6.667` [Mass mass of `H_(2)O=18`]
Total number of moles `=1.875 + 6.667` = 8.542
So, mole fraction of methanol `=(1.875)/(8.542)= 0.220`
Mole fraction of water `=(6.667)/(8.542)= 0.780`
