Give the characteristics of equilibrium constant.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The important features of equilibrium constant are given below :
(i) Equilibrium constant is applicable only when concentrations of the reactants and products have attained their equilibrium state.
(ii) The value of equilibrium constant does not change with initial concentrations of the reactants and products. It is independent to the initial concentrations of reactants and products.
(iii) The value of equilibrium constant for a reaction is contant at a given temperature. It changes with change of temperature.
(iv) A catalyst does not alter the equilibrium constant.
(v) The value of equilibrium constant for reverse reaction is inverse of equilibrium constant for forward reaction.
(vi) The equilibrium constant K for a reaction is related to the equilibrium constant of the corresponding reaction, wose equation is obtained by multiplying or dividing the equation for the original reaction by a small integer.
