Why does the dissociation of `PCl_(5)` decreases in the presence of `Cl_(2)` ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The reaction can be written as `PCl_(5) hArr PCl_(3) + Cl_(2)`
If we increase the concentration of `Cl_(2)`, for example, product in the above reaction then the equilibrium will shift towards the reactant side (Le-Chatelier.s principle). The equilibrium will shift towards the backward direction. So, dissociation of `PCl_(5)` decreases.
