Using Le-Chatelier's principle predict the effect of
increasing the pressure on following equilibrium :
`N_(2)(g) + 3H_(2)(g) hArr 2NH_(3)(g) +` Heat

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The given equilibrium is
`N_(2)(g) + O_(2)(g) underset("Endothermic")overset("Exothermic")hArr 2NO(g)` + Heat
(a) Effect of temperature : Since the reaction is exothermic in forward directon. Therefore according to Le-Chatelier.s principle, decrease in temperature will favour the forward direction.
(b) Effect of increasing the pressure : In the above reaction, nuber of moles of reactants and products are same. Therefore, any change in pressure does not affect the equilibirum state.
