Define oxidation and reduction on the basis of electronic with examples.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Oxidation : The process which involves loss of electrons by an atoms or group of atoms is called oxidation.
For example, `Sn^(2+) rarr Sn^(4+) + 2e^(-), Fe^(2+) rarr Fe^(3+) + e^(-)`
Reduction : The process which involves gain of electrons by an atom or group of atoms is called reduction.
For example, `Fe^(3+) + e^(-) rarr Fe^(2+), Sb^(5+) + 2e^(-) rarr Sb^(3+)`
