Justify tht the reaction 2Na(s) + H(2)...

Justify tht the reaction
`2Na(s) + H_(2)(g) rarr 2NaH(s)` is a redox reaction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Here the oxidation state of Hydrogen decreases from 0 to -1 (0 in `H_(2)` and -1 in NaH). It means hydrogen is getting reduced. Further the oxidation number of Na getting increased from 0 to +1. So sodium is getting oxidised. So as in this reaction, both oxidation and reduction are taking place simulataneously. So this is a redox change.
