Sodium metal is a very reactive metal. It gets exposed to air or moisture. When sodium metal is dropped in water, it reacts and releases large amount of hydrogen. It catches fire. Therefore, sodium is ot kept under water. It is kept under inert hydrocarbon solvents like kerosene oil or petroleium,
