Why solution of alkali metals in liquid ammonia are blue in colour and conducting in nature ?
OR
Solutions of alkali metals in liquid ammonia has high conductivity, paramagnetic and posses blue colour. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The solution of alkali metals in liquid ammonia gives ammoniated cations and ammoniated electrons.
`M+(x+y)NH_(3) to underset("Ammoniated cation")([M(NH_(3))_(x)]^(+))+underset("Ammoniated electron")([e(NH_(3))_(y)]^(-))`
When light falls on these ammoniated electrons, they get excited to higher energy levels. during transmission of energy or light, they impart blue colour to the solution. electrical conductivity is due to the ammoniated cations and ammoniated electrons. the blue coloured solutions are paramagnetic due to the presence of large number of unpaired electrons.
