What is plaster of paris ? How is it prepared ? Give its properties.

Plaster of paris is a hemihydrate of calcum sulphate `(CaSO_(4).1//2H_(2)O)`.
Preparation : It is prepared by heating gypsum `(CaSO_(4).2H_(2)O)` at 393 K.
`2(CaSO_(4).2H_(2)O) overset (393K)to2(CaSO_(4)).H_(2)O+3H_(2)O`
Properties,
(i) It is a white powder,
(ii) WHen it is mixed with water, it forms a plastic mass. it sets into a hard mass of interlocking crystals of gypsum. this process takes 10 to 15 minutes. it is known as setting of plaster of paris.
