'Is boric acid a protonic acid ? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As boric acid does not ionise in `H_(2)O` to give a proton. So it is not a protic acid. But, it acts as a Lewis acid by acceptings `e^(-s)` from `OH^(-)` ion of water and in turn releases `H^(+)` ion
`B(OH)_(3) to HOH to [B(OH)_(4)]^(-) + H^(+)`
