Give the general chemical reactivity of ...

Give the general chemical reactivity of group 14 elements with oxygen.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Reactivity towards oxygen : The group 14 elements form oxides when treated with oxygen. These are monoxide (MO) and dioxide (MO) respectively.
(ii) Reactivity towards water: In group 14 elements, carbon, silicon and germanium do not react with water. Only tin reacts with steam to form dioxide and dihydrogen gas.
`Sn + underset("(Steam)")(2H_(2)O) overset(Delta) to SnO_(2) + @H_(2)`
(iii) Reactivity towards halogen : The group 14 elements form two types of halides. These are `MX_(2)` and `MX_(4)`
