`CO_(2)` is a linear molecule. In this C atom undergoes `sp^(3)` hybridisation. Two `sp^(3)` hybridised orbitals of carbon atom overlap with two p orbitals of oxygen atoms. The hybridised orbitals of carbon atom form two sigma bonds. The unhybridised orbitals of carbon atom are involved in `p pi - p pi` bonding with oxygen atoms. The resonance structure of `CO_(2)` are as follows:
