`C Cl_4` is not hydrolysed but `SiCl_4` can be hydrolysed with water. Why ?

Text Solution

C-atom does not have vacant d-orbitals, Hence, it can not increase its co-ordination number beyond four. Silicon has vacant d-orbitals in its valence shell. Hence, it can increase its co-ordination number. Hence, Si atom in `SiCl_(4)`, accepts a lone pair of electrons from water. Thus, undergoes hydrolysis.
