Compare the behaviour of BCl(3) and C Cl...

Compare the behaviour of `BCl_(3)` and `C Cl_(4)`, with water.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

B atom in BCI, has only six electrons in the valence shell. Therefore, it is an electron deficient molecule. It can readily accept a pair of electrons donated by water and undergo hydrolysis.
`BCl_(3) + 3H_(2) O to H_(3)BO_(3) + 3HCI`
In `C Cl_(4)` C atom has 8 electrons in its shell. It is an electron precise molecule and neither accepts nor donates a pair of electron. Hence `C CI_(4)` , does not undergo hydrolysis in water.
