Decarboxylation reaction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Decarboxylation reaction: It is a process of heating carboxylic acid or their salt at 630K with sodalime. In this process removal of `CO_2` takes place. Alkane with lesser carbon atom is formed as a main product. For example,
`underset("Acetic acid")(CH_3COOH)+NaOH underset(630K)overset(CaO)to underset("Sod. acetate")(CH_3COONa)+H_2O`
`underset("Sodium-acetate")(CH_3COONa)+NaOH underset(630K)overset(CaO)to underset("Methane")(CH_4)+Na_2CO_3`
