According to peroxide effect, the addition of HBr to unsymmetrical alkene takes place opposite to Markownikoff.s rule. It occurs in the presence of organic peroxide such as benzoyl peroxide. This is also known as Anti Markownikoff.s rule or Kharasch effect.

It is only applicablëto HBr, HCl and HI do not exhibit peroxide effect even in the presence of organic peroxide.
