Alkynes can be prepared by following methods :
i) From vicinal dihalides : It can be prepared by dehydrohalogenation of vicinal dihalides in the presence of a suitable base.
`BrH_2C-CH_2 Br underset( -KBr-H_2O)overset("Alc.KOH")to H_2C=CH-Br underset(-NaBr-NH_3)overset(NaNH_2)to HC -= CH`
ii) From tetrahalides : Alkynes, are obtained by heating tetrahalides with zinc.
`Br_2HC-CHBr_2 + 2Zn rarr 2ZnBr_2 + HC -= CH`
