Why the melting and boiling points of alkynes are higher than alkenes and alkanes?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Alkynes have higher melting and boiling points because of their linear structure. The molecules are more closely packed in alkynes, so the magnitude of attractive forces are higher in alkynes than alkanes and alkenes. Hence, melting and boiling point of alkynes are higher than alkanes and alkenes.
