Haloalkanes undergo nucleophilic substit...

Haloalkanes undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions while haloarenes undergo electrophilic substitution reactions. Explian.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The various electrophilic substitution reactions follow three steps. These are given as below:
i) Generation of electrophile `(Y^(+))` : The electrophile is generated by dissociation of a reagent say XY under suitable conditions. `X - Y overset("Dissociation")to Y^(+) + :X^(-)`
ii) Attack of electrophile: In this step, electrophile attaks on the `pi`-electron cloud of aromatic ring. The formation of arenium ion or `sigma`-complex takes place which is stabilised by resonance.

iii)Removal of proton: In this step, nucleophile abstracts a proton from the intermediate carbocation. This results in the formation of substituted product.
