What are the major green-house gases?...

What are the major green-house gases?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The `CO_2` gas present in the air helps to maintain the temperature on the earth. But due to certain human activities, the percentage of `CO_2` is increasing in the atmosphere. `CO_2` gas allows the visible light to pass through them and absorb the infra red (IR) radiations reflected from the earth.s surface. After the absorption of IR radiations by `CO_2` molecules, these IR radiations get reflected in all directions. Some of them get reflected back towards earth.s surface. This heats up the atmosphere. Therefore, heating of the earth due to these radiations is known as green-house effect. The major green house gases are carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, chlorofluorocarbon compounds and water vapours.
