The infra red radiations of the sun are absorbed by the earth.s surface. These are re-emitted by the earth and get absorbed by the `CO_2` molecules. After this, some of these radiations are again reflected back to the earth. This warms the earth.s surface. In this way, `CO_2` plays an important role in "Green house effect".
