Carbon monoxide (CO) gas is more dangerous than carbon dioxide `(CO_2)` Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`CO_2` is a poisonous gas as it get bound to haemoglobin of the blood to form carboxy haemoglobin complex which is very much stable than oxyhaemoglobin complex. When the concentration of carboxyhaereoglobin increases in blood, the oxygen carring capacity of blood is greatly reduced. This results in various disorders. On the other hand, `CO_2` do not get attached with haemoglobin and is less harmful as compared to CO.
