Statues and Monuments in India are affected by acid rain. How?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Acid rain is the main pollutant attacking Taj Mahal. The main components of acid rain are oxides of nitrogen and sulphur. These oxides.of nitrogen and sulphur undergo many chemical reactions in the atmosphere to form acids like `HINO_3` and `H_2 SO_4` . When rain occurs, these acids come to the earth with rain. This rain is known as acid rain. The chemical reactions that take place are as follows:
`NO+ O_3 to NO_2 + O_2`
`NO_2 + 2O_2 to NO_3 + O_3`
`NO_2 + NO_3 to N_2 O_5`
`N_2 O_5 + H_2 O to 2HNO_3`
`SO_2 + 1/2 O_2 + H_2 O to H_2 SO_4`
