Why is acid rain considered as a threat to Taj Mahal ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Taj Mahal is made up of marble `(CaCO_3)`. The air over the Taj Mahal contains higher percentage of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. When rain occurs, the acid formed like `H_2 SO_4` reacts with the marble `(CaCO_3)` of Taj Mahal and slowly the marble is getting discoloured and lustureless.
`CaCO_3 + H_2 SO_4 to CaSO_4 + CO_2 + H_2 O`
