The phenomenon of conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms through the agency of living organisms is called nitrogen fixation. It occurs in two steps:
i) Ammonification : In this, proteins are converted into ammonia by decaying organisms.
ii) Nitrification : In this ammonium ions are converted into nitrates.
