What is pressure? Give its units and dimensions.

Text Solution

Pressure : It is defined as the normal force acting on a unit surface area of the fluid.
i.e., `P=(F)/(A)`
If force is not uniformly distributed, then `P=lim_(DeltaAto0)(DeltaF)/(DeltaA)=(dF)/(dA)`
where force `DeltaF` acts normally on a small area `DeltaA` surrounding the given point. Pressure is a scalar quantity.
Units
SI unit of pressure `=Nm^(-2)` of pascal (Pa)
CGs unit of pressure =dyne `cm^(-2)`.
Dimensional Formula : `P=(F)/(A)implies[P]=((MLT^(-2)))/((L^(2)))=[ML^(-1)T^(-2)]`
