Why is the vapour pressure of a solvent...

Why is the vapour pressure of a solvent lowered on the addition of non-volatile solute into it ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When a non-volatile solute is added into a solvent, some of the atoms of solvent on the surface are replaced by the solute particle. As a result of it, the number of particles of solvent decreases and hence vapour pressure also decrease.
