Write the factors affecting the stability of Complex Ion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

I. Charge on the central metal ion : In general, greater the charge density on the central ion, the greater is the stability of its complexes.
II. Size of metal ion : As the size of the metal ion decreases, the stability of complex increases.
III. Basic strength : The more basic a ligand, the greater is the ease with which it can donate its lone pair of electrons and therefore, the greater is stability of the complexes formed by it.
IV. Size and charge of ligands : For anion ligands, the higher the charge and smaller the size, the more stable is the complex formed.
