Chloroform is oxidised to poisonous phosgene in the presence of air as
`underset("Chloroform")(CHCl_3 + 1/2O_2) tounderset("Phosgene")(COCl_2) + HCl`
Therefore, chloroform is stored in dark coloured bottles to protect it from light.
