What is iodoform test ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All compounds containing the group `CH_3 - overset(O)overset(||)C - or CH_3 -overset(OH)overset(|)C - ` (i.e. methyl carbinols, such as ethyl alcohol, propan-2-ol) when treated with halogen and aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide haloform is formed and the reaction is known as haloform reaction. If the halogen used is iodine, a yellow precipitates of iodoform are formed and the reaction is called Iodoform reaction e.g.
`underset("ethanol")(CH_3CH_2OH) + 4I_2 + 6NaOH to underset("Iodoform")(CHI_3) + HCOONa + 5NaI + 5H_2O`
`underset("Propanone")(CH_3 COCH_3) + 3I_2 + 4NaOH to underset("Iodoform")(CHI_3) + CH_3 COONa + 3NaI + 3H_2O`
