Iodoform gives a precipitate with silver nitrate on heating while chloroform does not ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Carbon-iodine bond is quite weak `(213.4 KJ mol^(-1))` as compared to carbon chloride bond (326.4 kJ mol). Therefore when Iodoform is heated with `AgNO_3` solution, C -I bond gets cleaved easily and iodine ions react with `AgNO_3` solution to give precipitate of AgI. On the other hand C - Cl bond does not get cleaved.
